HIHWMS
Maui, Hawaii
The Makai concept for the landscape architecture of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary (HIHWMS) for NOAA recalls the organic patterns found in nature - specifically the sea - to organize the program elements of the Visitor Center. Tidal variations, currents, sea foam, lava and coral are the inspiration for paving patterns and the placement of plant materials connecting people to marine life and the sea.
